Mr. Peete - Room 3

Want to know what it is like in Room 3 at Hornbrook School?  Here's our life at a glance...

Room 3 is dynamic.  Students say that we should be our own reality television show.  I take that as a complement. We laugh, we cry (Margot in All Summer in a Day), we have our own inside jokes, we work hard and play hard...  When it comes down to it, we are a family.

Students learn skills in Room 3 that are just not emphasized elsewhere but are so important.

All students learn to become organized.  Students keep a binder, learn a filing system, and generate a portfolio worth a large portion of quarter grades.

All students learn to become public speakers.  This is a safe place to present speeches and to develop public speaking skills.  Students learn to use PowerPoint or Impress to aid presentations.  Speakers present topics to the entire school toward the end of each year.  Though these activities instill fear in many, it builds character.  Public speaking teaches students to be brave and take a chance.

All students learn to study for exams.  Study strategies are not innate.  Students don't wake up one day and know how to take exams.  From taking the DMV test to passing the BAR, exams are huge part of our society.  Students learn how to use study guides, partner studying strategies, and are taught academic vocabulary commonly found on exam.  We take the time to teach students HOW to show what they know.

All students learn to write and publish all types work.  They learn to write and publish short stories, persuasive essays, how-to essays, business letters, resumes, lab reports, research reports, and much more!

Student grades are based on performance and are tracked via software.  I don't give grades - students earn them.

Most students show up everyday unless it is unavoidable.  Students that have issues with attendance often have issues in this class because of the work load required.  Students and parents must understand that one day missed equals 6 hours of instruction lost.  Students must do all make-up work outside of the regular school day because we absolutely do not have school time for make-up assignments. Most students opt to go to school when possible because showing up is far better than being behind.
